We have been traveling so much lately, which definitely has its pros and cons. On the pro side, we have gotten to the point where we can have everything we own packed up in less than 30 minutes. Thats actually saying quite a lot, I tend to just kind of explode when we get somewhere- I can have a hotel room covered in clothes and assorted other junk about 5 minutes after we walk in the door- so finding everything and condensing my mess to the size of a backpack in half an hour is actually pretty impressive. On the con side, its exhausting to pack up everything that often. I love seeing so many new sights, but on the other hand, it would be nice to get to slow down for a day or two to catch my breath and not feel like I need to be rushing out the door to see whatever the current city we are in has to offer.
After leaving Aachen in yet more rain, we caught a train to Frankfurt. The ride on train was quite scenic, we traveled along the Rhine and passed through tons of really quaint small towns. We passed hills that had castles on top and hills with vineyards balanced precariously on their slopes. It was absolutely gorgeous!
Frankfurt is a huge city- we saw skyscrapers for the first time since Berlin. The Christmas market was in the center of what seemed to be the heart of the financial district at the foot of a beautiful, old town hall. Less crowded than some of the other markets, it was still very busy the first night we were there. We walked around a little but figured we would come back the next day to really explore.
Well, the next day it rained. Hard. And all day. Grrr. Fortunately, we had some indoor plans as well. We met up with a friend from Frankfurt who we had originally met in Serbia! We went and had a huge lunch of schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn, a really heavy, pancake like dessert dusted with powdered sugar and served with a berry jam- delicious but seriously filling. Even Nick wasn’t hungry for several hours!!
The next day the sun came out for a bit, so we walked along the river for a while until it was time to catch our train to Augsberg.
